German Film Week 2019
The German Film Week is the annual cultural highlight program of the Goethe-Institut Thailand. It showcases the best and newest films from German language cinema.
In 2019, this event becomes much larger than before, incorporating 8 venues all over Bangkok to host the most diverse selection of films so far. With contributions from Austria, France, Israel and Switzerland, the German Film Week becomes a celebration of friendship manifested in internationally renowned co-productions between Germany and its partners. The films are shown in their original soundtrack with Thai and English subtitles, creating a mixture of the familiar and unfamiliar. This blend of languages and cultures embedded in the Thai rainy season translates into an equally diverse audience, guaranteed to spark an intercultural dialogue.
This year’s film week reveals the many faces and phases of resistance. “The Young Karl Marx” portrays Marx’s journey from being exiled to France in 1843 to becoming the key figure of the movement against the ruling class. More than a century later, Gerhard Gundermann, an East German Miner turned Songwriter is challenging these political remnants in the film “Gundermann”, disclosing a significant chapter of European history. Young rebellious faces are introduced with “System Crasher”, German-Kenyan co-production “SUPA MODO” and 2018’s most viewed German film “All about me”.
In all three films, the protagonists are nine year olds that shake the world around them. Benni’s tantrums exhaust all child psychologists and carers that are assigned with her case. Jo refuses to give up on her dream to become an action film star despite her terminal illness and young Hape develops his talent as a comedian in the face of his mother’s severe depression.
On 8th June, the film “All about me” film opens the German Film Week with an introduction of H.E. Georg Schmidt, Ambassador of Germany to Thailand at the Goethe-Institut. The following screenings featuring the partnering countries will also be attended by the respective Ambassadors. The German Film Week promotes intercultural exchange with as many film fans as possible. This is why all films shown as part of the festival are priced at only 100THB, except for the screenings at the Goethe-Institut and ChangChui with free admission. Furthermore, the Goethe-Institut Thailand will incorporate the entire selection as part of its film catalogue to be viewed or borrowed free of charge in the in-house library.
