Coconuts Closing Its Doors

The beloved news website Coconuts will be closing its doors. The media company that has entertained Thais, Expats, and people from all over the region, has announced they will stop their operations after more than a a decade in the business. This has come as a sad surprise to their readers who have spent countless hours in the company of their entertaining news and lifestyle articles.

The Coconuts Website Will Stay Up but Without New Content

In a press release written by the regional website of Coconuts, they are elaborating on their decision to end their operations. Their founder, Byron Perry, says he is happy for all the entertainment and journalistic awards they have received throughout the years. He also shows appreciation for having, several times, been cited by many of the largest media companies in the world. However, despite the apparent success, Perry admits that Coconuts.co never was financially sustainable.

There was never any commercial success for Coconuts.co, which is the case for many other independent news publishers. In the heartfelt message to their readers, Perry said the following “We want to thank our readers profusely. Our core mission was to entertain our readers and we sincerely hope that we have managed to do that over the past 12 years“. Perry also thanks his staff who have done everything to make Conuts great. Despite Perry saying goodbye there is still a glimpse of hope in his words that they one day might re-launch Coconuts and begin entertaining their fans once again.

The Story of Coconuts Media

Coconuts was founded in 2011, in Bangkok, by American Byron Perry who was the CEO of the company until 2022. Despite being founded in Bangkok, and having their headquarters in Hong Kong, they covered local news in the following countries.

  • Thailand
  • The Philippines
  • Hong Kong
  • Singapore
  • Malaysia
  • Indonesia
  • Myanmar

Coconuts became popular for their modern and youthful way of approaching news, lifestyle, and culture. They have been especially appealing to a younger audience who have been enjoying their often humourous style of writing. In their heyday, they were producing more than a hundred articles in the countries they were active in, and their websites reached over a million unique visitors every month. They have also been very popular with Bangkok foodies who enjoyed the Coconuts Bangkok restaurant reviews and the cultured youngsters who always looked for the trendiest cultural events from their website.

We are very saddened to see that this important player in the Bangkok media scene will disappear and we wish their team good luck in their future endeavors.

Coconuts Media will continue to operate their other brands, including BK Magazine, Grove, and Soimilk.
