The Meeting of Two Legends

Two legends: San Carlo Opera and Zubin Mehta, conductor extraordinaire, come together for a spectacular showcase in celebration of the 20 th anniversary of Bangkok’s International Festival of Dance and Music.

Thailand’s longest running, independent performing arts festival is marking a significant anniversary this year as Bangkok’s International Festival of Dance & Music turns 20. A phenomenal feat considering its modest, but at that time ambitious, beginnings. Today the festival is admittedly one of the ultimate cultural experiences in Bangkok. Cutting across generations it attracts an audience that revels in the sheer joy of a music, the drama of operas, the power of ballets… and so much more. There is something here for everyone.

To celebrate this landmark anniversary two legends are coming together promising a veritable feast to the festival-goer. The two are San Carlo Opera from Naples (Italy) and the world’s most highly regarded, and awarded, orchestral conductor Zubin Mehta. Together, they promise Bangkok four days of magic: two days devoted to opera, and two days to symphony concerts. These four performances will mark the grand opening of the five-week long Festival (Sept 12 –Oct 18).

September 12 and 14 will see the staging of Carmen, opera in four acts (with one interval), by the San Carlo Opera, accompanied by the San Carlo Orchestra conducted by Zubin Mehta. September 13 and 15 on the other hand will see the San Carlo Symphony Orchestra take centre stage with symphony concerts, again conducted by maestro Zubin Mehta

The city of Naples, famous for its cultural offerings would be bereft without its legendary Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest continuously active opera house in the world. This opera house has been staging masterpieces since 1737 even before Milan's La Scala and Venice's La Fenice theatres came into existence. Commissioned by the Bourbon King Charles III of Naples, the opera house became the lynchpin for the development of classical music and opera not only in Italy, but Europe.

Leading composers of the world like Johann Adolph Hasse, Joseph Haydn, Johann Christian Bach and Christoph Willibald Gluck, Vincenzo Bellini, Saverio Mercadante, Gaetano Donizetti (who composed 16 operas for San Carlo) considered a performance at the historically important San Carlo as a goal of their career. The famous Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, from 1815 to 1822, was house composer and artistic director. Not surprisingly the San Carlo Opera company has enjoyed great success all over the world and is famous its critically acclaimed productions and singers. In the 21st century the opera continues to be a fine ambassador, and keeper, of Italian culture and Neapolitan tradition in the world.

In Bangkok, this legendary company will stage Carmen (opera in four acts with one interval), a passionate rendering of Georges Bizet’s much loved classic starring some of the top singers in the opera world.

Both performances of the opera are accompanied by a full orchestra conducted by Maestro Zubin Mehta.

This legendary orchestra, part of the San Carlo Opera, currently has Zubin Mehta as its Honorary Director. A living legend, Maestro Zubin Mehta is one of the world’s most highly regarded conductors. His musical journey has seen him head some of the world’s leading orchestras including Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and New York Philharmonic Orchestra to name a few.

The San Carlo Orchestra itself has a grand history closely linked to that of the San Carlo Opera House, which opened in1737 with the Achilles in Skyros by Domenico Sarro. Ever since, the orchestra been the recipient of works composed by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Bach, Verdi to name a few of the greats. The Neapolitan composer Giuseppe Martucci also had a constant and formative presence at the Orchestra.

In the decades following World War II, San Carlo interacted with several famous conductors like Gui, Serafin, Santini, Gavazzeni, Böhm, Fricsay, Scherchen, Cluytens, Knappertsbusch and Mitropoulos, including, in 1958, Igor Stravinsky. Great soloists through the centuries have also played with the Orchestra. The sixties saw two emerging young directors on the podium: Claudio Abbado, who made his debut in 1963, and Riccardo Muti in 1967. Several more collaborations followed.

In Bangkok, under the baton of Zubin Mehta the orchestra will on Sept 13 take on Beethoven (Leonore Overture No.3; Symphony No. 9 with chorus and singers), and on Sept 15 they will strike up with Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 4; Symphony No. 6).

เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองวาระครบ 20 ปีของมหกรรมศิลปะการแสดงและดนตรีนานาชาติ กรุงเทพฯ สองตำนานแห่งวงการดนตรีคลาสสิกของโลกบนเวทีเดียวกันครั้งแรกใน ทวีปเอเชีย ระหว่างคณะอุปรากรซาน คาร์โลแห่งเมืองเนเปิลส์ ประเทศอิตาลี และ วาทยกรระดับโลก นั่นคือ มาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา จะมาร่วมกันรังสรรค์ความยิ่งใหญ่มหัศจรรย์ กับสองวันของโอเปราเต็มรูปแบบ และสองวันของซิมโฟนี คอนเสิร์ตสุดอลังการ ทั้งสี่การแสดงดังกล่าวถือเป็นการเปิดงาน “มหกรรมศิลปะการแสดงและดนตรีนานาชาติ กรุงเทพฯ ครั้งที่ 20” รวมระยะเวลาของเทศกาลฯ ทั้งสิ้น คือห้าสัปดาห์ด้วยกัน (12 กันยายน ถึง 18 ตุลาคม 2561)

สำหรับวันที่ 12 และ 14 กันยายน คือการแสดงอุปรากรเต็มรูปแบบ “คาร์เมน” อุปรากรสามองก์ (พักการแสดงหนึ่งครั้ง) โดยคณะอุปรากรซาน คาร์โล บรรเลงดนตรีประกอบโดยวงดุริยางค์ซิมโฟนี ซาน คาร์โล ออร์เคสตรา ควบคุมและกำกับดนตรีโดย มาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา ส่วนวันที่ 13 และ 15 กันยายนเป็นการแสดงซิมโฟนี คอนเสิร์ต โดยวงซาน คาร์โล ซิมโฟนี ออร์เคสตรา ซึ่งมาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา จะเป็นวาทยกรเช่นเดียวกัน

สำหรับเมืองเนเปิลส์ ศูนย์กลางของวัฒนธรรมอันเลื่องชื่อที่สุดของเมืองหรือในระดับประเทศ คงหนีไม่พ้นโรงอุปรากรที่เป็นตำนาน นั่นคือโรงอุปรากรแห่งซาน คาร์โล หรือ Teatro di San Carlo ซึ่งได้รับการขนานนามว่าเป็นโรงอุปรากรที่มีคณะแสดงที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดขอ งโลกและยังคงดำเนินการแสดงอยู่จวบจนปัจจุบัน ซึ่งเริ่มต้นตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1737 ก่อตั้งขึ้นก่อนหน้าโรงอุปรากร La Scala แห่งเมืองมิลาน และ La Fenice แห่งเมืองเวนิส ด้วยการสนับสนุนของกษัตริย์ชาร์ลส์ที่สามแห่งเนเปิลส์ โรงอุปรากรแห่งนี้จึงกลายเป็นจุดสำคัญที่อุปรากรและดนตรีคลาสสิกเกิ ดการพัฒนาขึ้น มิใช่เพียงแค่ในประเทศอิตาลี หากแต่รวมถึงทวีปยุโรปด้วย นอกจากนั้นยังเป็นจุดกำเนิดของอุปรากรสมัยใหม่ ซึ่งมีรากฐานมาจาก Neapolitan Tradition จากประวัติศาสตร์ของดนตรีตะวันตกเกี่ยวเนื่องกับอุปรากรในศตวรรษที่ 18 ซึ่งนักประพันธ์ต่างสร้างสรรค์งานและศึกษารูปแบบของอุปรากรในเมือง เนเปิลส์เป็นหลัก เพราะฉะนั้นถือว่าเนเปิลส์เป็นเมืองแห่งศูนย์กลางของอุปรากรในยุคนั้น

คีตกวีชั้นแนวหน้าของโลก เช่น Johann Adolph Hasse, Joseph Haydn, Johann Christian Bach และ Christoph Willibald Gluck, Vincenzo Bellini, Saverio Mercadante, Gaetano Donizetti (ผู้ซึ่งประพันธ์อุปรากรถึง 16 การแสดงสำหรับโรงอุปรากรแห่งซาน คาร์โล) ต่างก็มุ่งมั่นในการนำเสนอการแสดงผลงานของตัวเองที่โรงอุปรากรแห่ง นี้ อันถือเป็นเครื่องหมายยืนยันของความสำเร็จในวิชาชีพของตัวเอง นอกจากนั้น Gioachino Rossini คีตกวีและผู้ประพันธ์อุปรากรที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดของโลกชาวอิตาลี ก็ได้เป็นนักประพันธ์และผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ในโรงอุปรากรนี้ระหว่างปี ค.ศ.1815 ถึง 1822 ด้วยเช่นกัน

ไม่แปลกใจแต่อย่างใดที่คณะอุปรากรแห่งซาน คาร์โลจะได้ชื่นชมกับความสำเร็จไปทั่วโลก โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในด้านความคิดสร้างสรรค์ในการสร้างและออกแบบ การแสดง รวมถึงคุณภาพอันสุดยอดของนักร้องอุปรากรซึ่งทุกคนล้วนผ่านการคัด สรรและเคี่ยวกรำกว่าจะขึ้นมายืนทำการแสดงอยู่บนเวทีหลักของโรงอุป รากรนี้ได้ และในศตวรรษที่ 21 นี้เช่นกันที่คณะอุปรากรแห่งซาน คาร์โล ยังคงเป็นทูตทางวัฒนธรรมส่งผ่านศิลปะการแสดงดั้งเดิมอันหาชมได้ยา กยิ่งของอิตาลีไปสู่สายตาชาวโลก

และในกรุงเทพมหานครครั้งนี้ ถือว่าเป็นครั้งแรกในทวีปเอเชียที่คณะอุปรากรแห่งซาน คาร์โล ยกการแสดงอุปรากรเต็มรูปแบบ “คาร์เมน”(อุปรากรสามองก์กับหนึ่งช่วงพักการแสดง) ผลงานอันมีชื่อเสียงและเป็นที่รักของผู้ชมทั่วโลกโดย Georges Bizet ร่วมด้วยศิลปินอุปรากรระดับแนวหน้าของโลก ทั้งสองรอบการแสดงบรรเลงดนตรีประกอบโดยวงซิมโฟนี ออร์เคสตราเต็มวง อำนวยเพลงและกำกับดนตรีโดย มาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา ซึ่งในปัจจุบัน มาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา ดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นวาทยกรเกียรติยศ ท่านเป็นตำนานของวงการดนตรีคลาสสิกที่ยังคงมีลมหายใจ ตลอดระยะเวลาแห่งวิชาชีพวาทยกรของท่านนั้นได้ผ่านการกำกับและค

ในกรุงเทพมหานคร ภายใต้การกำกับและควบคุมวงของมาสโตร สุบิน เมห์ทา วงออร์เคสตราแห่งซาน คาร์โลจะทำการแสดงสองผลงานอันยิ่งใหญ่ของเบโธเฟน วันที่ 13 กันยายน คือ Leonore Overture No.3 และ Symphony No. 9 ร่วมกับนักร้องประสานเสียงและนักร้องเดี่ยว และในวันที่ 15 กันยายน นำเสนอผลงานซิมโฟนีสองบทของไชคอฟสกี นั่นคือ ซิมโฟนีหมายเลข 4 และ หมายเลข 6
