Expat Life with AVIS Chiang Mai

Today I drove the 3 hour plus 177kms drive from Chiang Mai to Maekok River Resort 2kms from the Laos border in the AVIS Chiang Mai Toyota Fortuner hire car.

The pleasure of independence and the open road was pointedly obvious to me whilst at breakfast when the staff of the hotel I was staying in chased out a Chinese family who had booked a visit to an Elephant Training camp.

The staff were I think quite abrupt with the family of 5 Chinese people as they had not checked out of the hotel and were late for the tour bus now waiting outside. The driver of the tour bus was again quite rude and taking photographs of the party pointing to her watch weigh an angry face. The Chinese family who had only just arrived in the breakfast room grabbed toast and a couple of pieces of fruit whilst I had a leisurely full breakfast. Such was the pleasure of booking an AVIS hire car.

I don’t know what the cost of a tour bus for 5 people to an elephant resort was but at a guess, I would say that it probably wasn’t far off the cost of a one day car hire… and I had breakfast!

I then made the 3/4 hour drive and enjoyed the colourful montage of the mountains above Chiang Mai. The temples in the hills, the beautiful colours and ever-changing scenery as I drove in leisurely to Maekok.
