Blue Swimming Crabs Bank

The Khao Takiab Blue Swimming Crabs Bank was formed by a group of small boat fishermen in the Ban Khao Takiab community in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

The objective is to rehabilitate and increase the number of blue swimming crabs resources in the Gulf of Thailand which is releasing sea creatures are the traditional way of local fishermen.

The community are aware on the importance of crab conservation and that of marine animals.Their plan is to increase occupational security and income from fishing. When the fishermen return to shore they sort the sea creatures they catch according to their size. By bringing mother crabs with eggs, outside the carapace, and other undersized marine animals that are not yet suitable for sale or consumption, they pass them onto the Blue Swimming Crabs Bank.

Khun Tai Chuk a former local fisherman at Khao Takiab who is currently in charge of the Blue Crab Bank brings various sea creatures to the slip in Khao Takiab to release back into the sea.

The berried female blue swimming crab, which has dark black eggs, will be cultured in order to continue breeding baby crabs by putting them in the mother crab: the mother crab then hatches all the eggs and prepares them to be released before being sold or consumed. Berried female blue swimming crabs on average have about 300,000 eggs each and raising them to be released into the sea.

These baby crabs eat plankton. That’s why baby blue crabs have to be released every day. Every morning at 9am, Tai Chuk will load baby blue swimming crabs and sea animals onto his trailer to be released back into the sea. He takes his motorcycle trailer to Soi Khao Takiab 1, near the octagonal pavilion.

Tai Chuk has doing this for more than 10 years and every day the Blue Swimming Crab Bank at Khao Takiab can release up to 2-3 million baby blue swimming crabs per day. We provide the opportunity for children and adults to join the activity for free of charge.

The Blue Swimming Crab Bank encourages people to realise the importance of conservation and the restoration of blue swimming crabs by releasing them back into the sea.

👉 Why should a name or symbol be written on the carapace of an animal? Because it is a symbol to let fishermen know such animals of the catch should be released back into the sea. In addition, most Thai people view euthanasia as an animal and therefore do not sell it. The pens are safe for the animals and the environment.
👉 Write your names on the animal’s carapace. Step 1. Use a cloth to dry the carapace of the animal. Step 2. Take the pen provided, and write on the shell. Step 3. Wait a moment for the ink to dry. before releasing it into the sea
👉 The right way to release marine animals 🐙 (blue crabs, horseshoe crabs, clams, etc.): should be released into the sea with sufficient depth. Above the waves crashing against the shore because the animal is still in recovery. It is not strong enough to swim against the current. The baby blue crab can be released into the sea near the coastal area because if it is released in deep water it may become food for fish.
