“OS PORTUGUESES – THE PORTUGUESE”

On the occasion of the 500 th anniversary of the First Pact of Friendship and Trade between Portugal and Siam (1518), the Embassy of Portugal, Camões – Portuguese Cultural Centre and AICEP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand Cultural Centre, and sponsorship by Siam Piwat, Icon Siam and Camões – Institute for Cooperation and Language, are proud to present for the first time in Thailand, a performance by the internationally acclaimed Portuguese musician Rodrigo Leão. The performance “OS PORTUGUESES – THE PORTUGUESE” will mark the opening of the festivities that celebrate the long-lasting Thai-Portuguese relationship.

Rodrigo Leão was one of the musicians and composers behind the extraordinarily successful Portuguese ensemble Madredeus; he was in the band for nearly 10 years before focusing on his own solo career.

Critics have often described Leão’s music as cinematographic, and he has collaborated on soundtracks for films and documentaries. He composed music for and performed in Wim Wenders’ Lisbon Story (1994), and he was the composer of the soundtrack for the Lee Daniels’ Oscar-nominated historical drama The Butler (2013) starring Forest Whitaker.

Rodrigo’s 2004 album was Cinema, and from then on his backing group became the Cinema Ensemble. And, as he moved further in his exploration of instrumental textures, he felt the need to return to the simplicity of the pop song.

Rodrigo Leão invites internationally acclaimed singers such as Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, The Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon or Tindersticks’ Stuart Staples to sing on his albums and live shows. He has performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Ludovico Einaudi with whom he toured in a joint project in Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Rodrigo Leão remains the same quietly spoken, modest and talented Lisboner who started out as a bassist in an indie-rock band before moving into Madredeus’ chamber-pop, the neoclassical textures of his own early solo material and his own unique, wistful pop songs, with guest singers like alt-Fado singer Lula Pena, Brazilian star Adriana Calcanhoto, the São Paulo newcomer Thiago Pethit. Joan Wasser aka Joan as Policewoman, or the Australian singer Scott Mathew.

This quiet man has extended his talents into new and unexpected territories over the past few years. While performing live in some of the most legendary venues of the world – London’s Barbican Centre, Barcelona’s Palau de la Musica, the Parisian theatres Alhambra and Grand Rex, Amsterdam’s Melkweg, Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro or Washington’s Kennedy Center.

He was invited to lead the artistic festivities of the 40th anniversary of the Portuguese Revolution of 1974 with a free concert on the steps of the National Parliament in Lisbon, resulting in the live CD/DVD O Espírito de Um País, and created music for an installation by the late Japanese artist and aquarist Takashi Amano, Underwater Forests, as well as producing limited-edition electronica album A Vida Secreta das Máquinas.

In 2015, the prestigious classical label Deutsche Grammophon released O Retiro, an orchestral project the Portuguese composer had looked forward to for a long time: a collaboration with Lisbon’s acclaimed Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir, a thoughtful, reflective, contemplative work. Rodrigo followed it by recording a whole album of songs with the New York-based singer-songwriter Scott Matthew. 2016’s Life Is Long was released after the two artists recorded together a couple of songs and realised their sensibilities matched perfectly. Life Is Long has been acclaimed by the press and the public and throughout the world tour 2017.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of his solo career in 2018, Rodrigo offers the audience all over the world the amazing versatility of his work, with three new recordings and stage concerts on the way. In March he released O Aniversário, a double-CD retrospective of his greatest hits and favourite compositions,

accompanied by a brand new stage production. At the same time, Rodrigo will be touring with a smaller band the Instrumental – O Ensaio show, focusing on instrumental compositions while testing before a live audience material that may appear on his next studio album due at the end of 2018.

Bangkok will be his premiere in Thailand and for this very special occasion, the artist will present a unique and exquisite performance: Os Portugueses (The Portuguese). This performance collects all his material sung in Portuguese along with the instrumental material written for the TV documentary seriesPortugal – A Social Portrait, a seven-episode documentary about the evolution of Portuguese society during the last 50 years.

On stage, Rodrigo will be accompanied by the Mozambican singer Selma and a line- up anchored in a string suit (violin, cello and viola), as well as a multi- instrumentalist set that will allow him play back the multiple sound environments of the original recordings.

ในปี พ.ศ. 2558 Deutsche Grammophon เปิดตัว O Retiro โปรเจคดนตรีออเคสตร้าที่ทุกคนรอคอยมา อย่างยาวนานเป็นการทำงานร่วมกับวงที่มีชื่อเสียงของกรุงลิสบอน Gulbenkian Orchestra and Choir เป็นผลงาน ที่สะท้อนความคิดและเป็นผลงานที่ลึกซึ้งตรึงใจ Rodrigo ได้เดินตามเส้นทางนี้ด้วยการบันทึกบทเพลงทั้งอัลบั้ม ร่วมกับนักร้องนักแต่งเพลงชาวนิวยอร์ค – Scott Matthew และในปี พ.ศ.2559 อัลบั้ม Life Is Long ได้ถูกเผยแพร่ หลังจากที่ทั้งสองศิลปินได้บันทึกเพลงไว้ด้วยกันและตระหนักถึงความรู้สึกในการเป็นคู่หูได้อย่างลงตัว Life Is Long ได้รับการยกย่องจากสื่อมวลชนและสาธารณชนตลอดการจัดเวิล์ดทัวร์ในปี พ.ศ. 2560

เพื่อเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองครบรอบ 25 ปีในฐานะนักดนตรีเดี่ยวของเขาในปีพ. ศ. 2561 นี้ Rodrigo ได้นำเสนอผลงานของเขาให้ผู้ฟังทั่วโลกได้สัมผัสถึงความเก่งกาจในการทำงานของเขาด้วยซิงเกิ้ลใหม่ 3 ซิงเกิ้ล รวมทั้งการจัดแสดงคอนเสิร์ตนี้จัดเตรียมอย่างยิ่งใหญ่ ในเดือนมีนาคมที่ผ่านมาเขาได้เปิดตัว O Aniversário ซึ่งเป็นผลงานเพลงฮิตที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดออกมาในรูปแบบ Double-CD พร้อมกับการสร้างสรรค์โปรดักชั่นใหม่ล่าสุด ในเวลาเดียวกัน Rodrigo จะเดินทางทัวร์คอนเสิร์ตไปพร้อมกับวงดนตรีในนาม Instrumental – O Ensaio มุ่งเน้นไปที่การบรรเลงดนตรี เพื่อแสดงผลงานบางส่วนให้ได้ชม ก่อนที่อัลบั้มใหม่ล่าสุดของเค้าจะปรากฏออก มาเผยแพร่ในปลายปีพ. ศ. 2561 นี้

กรุงเทพมหานคร จะเป็นที่เปิดตัวครั้งแรกในประเทศไทยของ Rodrigo ในโอกาสพิเศษนี้เขาจะนำเสนอ ผลงานที่มีเอกลักษณ์และงดงามในการแสดงชุด “Os Portugueses (The Portuguese)” การแสดงนี้ได้รวบรวมบท เพลงทั้งหมดที่เขียนขึ้นในภาษาโปรตุเกส รวมถึงบทเพลงที่เขียนขึ้นสำหรับภาพยนตร์สารคดีทางทีวีโปรตุเกส เรื่อง A Social Portrait ซึ่งเป็นสารคดี 7 ตอนที่ดำเนินเรื่องเกี่ยวกับวิวัฒนาการของสังคมโปรตุเกสในช่วง 50 ปีที่ผ่านมา จากรูปภาพเรียบเรียงเป็นซีรีส์ ที่จะถ่ายทอดให้ผู้ชมได้ดูตลอดการแสดงบนเวที
