Based on a popular novel, this Mexican film is a story of magic realism, and is a feast for the senses, as it uniquely portrays the sensual effects of food on men and women. The title infact, has sensuous connotations. Tita is the girl whose cooking has mesmeric power, and she uses it to full effect,when she falls in love with the dashing Pedro.
He reciprocates the love, but isforced to marry her elder sister, Rosaura, since Tita is the youngest child, and as per family tradition (which she resents), she is expected to take care of her mother. The one who supports her is her middle sister, Gertrudis, who runs away from home and marries a man of her choice, in the Revolution. Each of the sisters, in fact, represents something of the Mexican Revolution, which is why the film is more than just a story about food and passion.
Tita’s and Pedro’s ‘forbidden’ love continues, much to the anger of her domineering mother. Meanwhile the kindly Dr Brown falls in love with Tita and wants to marry her. It’s a tough choice for Tita to make, and she knows that things have to come to a head. And they do come to a fiery end.
The movie won ten of Mexico’s top Ariel awards, was screened at festivals around the world, from Chicago to Sydney to Tokyo. It was the highest grossing Spanish-language film in the US, and was Mexico’s nomination for the Oscars, in 1993.
With lush visuals, brilliant images, simmering emotions, this a Mexican film that is not easy to forget.
