Princess Scheherazade

Taiwanese violinist Yu-Chien Tseng joins to TPO and Chief Conductor Alfonso Scarano of Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. This is perfectly paired with the concert’s second half, where the violin is once again the protagonist, this time weaving its sensuous melody as Scheherazade in Rimsky-Korsakov’s colorful portrait of a sultan’s wife.

Synopsis:

Two Russian masterpieces feature prominently in Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Princess Scheherazade” concerts. Challenging, monumental and distinctly Russian, Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto is a demanding work for any violinist and a favorite for audiences.

The bold and majestic tone poem Scheherazade, by Prokofiev’s great countryman Rimsky-Korsakov is storytelling through music. It depicts classic stories from the Arabian Nights as told by a beautiful princess in an effort to save her life from a vengeful sultan.

Joining the orchestra is incredibly talented Taiwanese violinist Yu-Chien Tseng. A prizewinner in several prestigious competitions, including the Queen Elisabeth and Tchaikovsky competitions, the twenty three year old Yu-Cheng has already recorded two CDs and is building a reputation as an emerging artist with high praise from critics around the world.

The violin features prominently in this concert. In Scheherazade, the voice of the princess is represented by themes played on the solo violin.  The themes Scheherazade are both passionate and varied taking inspiration from what the composer called “Oriental” music. Rimsky-Korsakov’s love for music from the east inspired generations of composers to use techniques and musical colors beyond the confines of Western musical tradition. Chief conductor Alfonso Scarano leads TPO in this unique symphonic work.
