We are proud to screen a grand historical film from the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, for the first time. ‘Myn Bala’ (which means ‘Thousand Warriors’) is based on the life of a a mythical Kazakh warrior-hero Sartai, of the 18 th century, who fought against the Dzungars, a merciless tribe who ruled over the Kazakhs. Sartai watched his parents being killed by the Dzungars, as a child, and vowed revenge. After he trained as a warrior, he teamed up with two close friends and a group of guerrilla fighters, to spring surprises and attack the Dzungars. The movement spread in the steppes, until the final Battle of Anyrakay in 1729, which is a landmark date in Kazakh independence.

This is another topical film for today, because the guerrilla fights remind us of similar happenings all around the world. The story has many ups and downs. Sartai falls in love with the daughter of a tribe-leader, and is confused what to do. He faces opposition from a close friend and is nearly killed by him. But he never loses focus, and remains determined on his task.

More than 20,000 contenders across the country were auditioned for this film, to play the important role of Sartai. The whole movie is set outdoors, and the visuals are spectacular- the endless steppes, giant tents, unique tribal culture of the country.

The story also has some magnificently-shot fight sequences, which have been compared to epic Hollywood films like Braveheart. The final battle is particularly outstanding. This was one of the most expensive films made in Kazakhstan, by one of their best-known action-directors, and was a huge ‘hit’ in the country. It was also shown in many international festivals and was the country’s Oscar nominee in 2014.
