Calling all Trash Heroes!

Trash Hero launches first crowdfunding campaign

trash hero - children

Have you bought a latte today? (In your reusable mug, of course!) What about a breakfast bagel or magazine?

What if we told you that for the same price of this morning coffee you could teach a child how to develop good, sustainable habits for the rest of his or her life in a fun, empowering way?

Inspired by the amazing kids we see at our cleanups around Southeast Asia every week, we’ve produced a full colour picture book that makes a powerful connection between children’s imagination and real world actions.

The engaging and beautifully illustrated story examines the impact of plastic pollution – a critical issue in this part of the world – through the eyes of sea creatures and the fictional character of “Trash Hero”, the boy who tries to save them.

The books ends with a positive message about collaboration as Trash Hero finds help through working together with others – and appeals to the reader to help him as well.

But we don’t just leave it there. Together with their family and local Trash Hero volunteers, children are then challenged to clean and reduce waste in their own community, using prompts from the activity section, and gaining rewards such as Trash Hero t-shirts and certificates in the process.

The challenges – like all actions of Trash Hero – are designed to be practical, fun and reinforce long term behaviour change.

The book will be printed in 3 different languages – English, Thai and Bahasa Indonesia – and distributed for free, along with the reward prizes, to local schools and children’s groups. Activities will be organised by volunteers in our existing Trash Hero chapters.

To get these books and t-shirts into the hands of children in Thailand and Indonesia, we have set up a crowdfunding campaign at 100-days.net. Can you support us with a donation or a share of this post? Every little can help to empower this new generation of Trash Heroes, our future environmental guardians who can help stop plastic pollution in their communities. Thank you for your support!
