The day my chair arrived

I wanted to reward myself for my 60th birthday so I decided to purchase a La-z-boy leather recliner.

I had one in the UK for many years and it was an indulgence, the ultimate luxury, as well as being a beautiful piece of furniture that dominated my Scandinavian pine wooden floored, sunlit apartment overlooking the River Thames. My chair then was a light coloured cream beige so I decided to perhaps tone it down a bit and settle for something more in keeping with my new home – a three storey town house in a mooban in Bangkok.

I went into the showroom -750 Sukhumvit Rd. (beside Soi 30/1) and was met by a delightful young lady and she patiently took me through the range taking me from one floor to the other in their 4 floor showroom. The furniture was beautiful and the smell of leather hung heavy in the air. You can now have all manner of alternatives – it wasn’t like that in my day!

But I declined the power recliners and rockers and settled for what I thought was perfect for me, a stable recliner with a handle on the right hand side to bring up the leg rest. The colour I chose was Fango a mocha/coffee colour that I thought very modern. It was a new colour to the range the young lady told me. She recommended that I had the padded backrest as it would support my ageing spine better and I agreed it was a sensible choice after trying out the display version. We finished all the paperwork and I was told that my chair would take roughly 30 days to be delivered from the factory – I couldn’t wait!

I was called a month later and given a delivery date but was out on the day and so I gave my staff strict instructions which room it should be delivered and also told them that no one should sit it in before I did, or indeed after. It was my chair and was very personal to me!

When I came home that day I climbed the stairs to my first floor lounge and could smell the quality leather before I had reached the top of the stairs. I gazed upon my chair and looked at it as an object of beauty before I sat down into it and melted into the soft leather squab and backrest. I reached down for the wooden handle and raised the footrest and it clicked into place with my legs horizontal from my seat. I eased back on the backrest and the back lowered allowing me to almost lay out flat. I was tempted then and there to close my eyes and drift off into the distance but as it was still the middle of the afternoon I resisted the temptation.

I am sat in my chair now writing this and I am ever so comfortable so if you want to buy the one you love a wonderful present or to reward yourself like I did I suggest that you go and talk to the staff in the showroom. Tell them that Nick sent you!
