Don’t match your shampoo and conditioner brand!

Do you always match your shampoo and conditioner brand? Do you believe that using the same brand products will help you to achieve better results? Unfortunately, this approach is not true. Matching your shampoo and conditioner brand appears to be not only unnecessary – it also might stop your precious hair from reaching its full potential.

Is that really true ??

A New York hairstylist and salon owner Nunzio Saviano says “It’s almost like you’re treating two different hair textures, one is from the scalp to the mid-shaft, and the other is from the mid-shaft to the ends.” Saviano further explains that if you have an oily scalp and dry ends, you should use a shampoo which works best for the roots and a conditioner that’ll help hydrate the ends. “It never has to be the same brand,” he adds. Well-reasoned, right?

You should select shampoos and conditioners as a “prescription “to treat your hair according to its condition. On the shopping shelves you find shampoos and conditioners with various functions (volumizing, cleansing, smoothing, moisturizing, for instance) and it alone rarely plays as a matching set for your hair, says Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys Salon in San Diego. Choosing a solo product from different types is totally fine as long as you’re paying attention to your personal needs.

If you have rough hair, look for a smoothing agent. If your strands are finer, choose volumizing formula. It all depends to what kind of style you’re going for each day and feel free to play with different shampoo and conditioner types. If you want to give your fine curls a sleek blowout try to switch from volumizing conditioners to silicone based ones instead.

The only time you should be all matched up, if you’re dealing with dandruff or an itchy scalp, according to Rolanda J. Wilkerson, Ph.D., a principal scientist for Procter and Gamble. It’s because using a cosmetic conditioner with anti-dandruff cleanser could reduce the scalp care benefits. Wilkerson added that 60 percent of the active ingredient in Head & Shoulders, known as pyrithione zinc, is reduced on the scalp when you don’t follow up with the brand’s anti-dandruff conditioner.

In other cases just remember to mix instead of match!
