For decades, humans have been cultivating onions which are widely used around the world. Mainly used as a key food ingredient or eaten raw, it is yet to discover one of mother earth’s natural remedy. Onions has also been known for preservation, insect repellent, and medical purposes. But did you know that it had saved countless lives in the past centuries, when technology and medicines were still undeveloped and deficient?
1. It can absorb virus and bacteria in the air.
During 1918, a flue had killed over 50-100 millions of people by the span of 2 years in 1918-1920. With the flue on the outbreak, one household seemed to be perfectly healthy. A doctor came to the family to find out what has kept them from the flue in which the housewife gave him an unbelievable response. She had placed unpeeled onions on each room of the house to guard off bad bacteria. The doctor then took samples of the onions which he discovered that traces of the flu virus were absorbed by the onion. To put in to practical use, put a bulb of onion on a glass full of water and leave it beside your office when you’re working. People may think you that you are warding off evil spirits, but actually, you are just warding off bad bacteria and infectious flue. If you have colds, the onions beside you can help absorb the flu which circulates in the air reducing the possibility of spreading to others.
2. It is antibiotic and antiseptic.
Over the years, our moms have given us advice and life-hacks that seemed to be questionable and irrelevant.Also known as Old wife tales, they are exaggerated and inaccurate, but one thing for sure is that onions are natural antibiotic and antiseptic. Onions are used to eliminate molds, stinky closets and drawers, which on the other hand have similar effect on the human wounds and body. They have chemicals made from powerful antioxidant and Quercetin (an antibacterial agent), which fights bacteria-causing skin disease, bacteria causing stomach ulcer, inflammations, and infections. You can simply tape a slice of onion on the infected area, but for your ears, you must heat up the onions, extract its juice, and use it as an ear drops. Another way is to eat it directly, or just toss it in a salad to enjoy it in delicious manner.
3. A miracle remedy for chronic disease.
For children with epilepsy, whose conventional treatment proves ineffective, then black onion seeds give an alternate solution for reducing refractory seizures. It’s antiepileptic has been proven to help epileptics. Not only that, onions can reduce and possibly treat chronic conditions such as asthma, sinus, head, neck, and colon cancer, diabetes and heart diseases. Though best known for bad breath, eating raw onions can change a person’s life.
4. It is a natural beauty product.
Women in general, have invested their luxurious time and money on hair products to keep it strong, beautiful, and glamour. Shampoo now days use sulfur as a key ingredient, but onions are naturally rich in sulfur which is one of the essential nutrient in promoting hair growth. Onions also contains many important essential minerals and vitamins which are effective for regenerating hair follicles and stimulate hair growth. Squeeze or shred your raw onions and apply it directly to your scalp and hair roots and slowly massage it evenly. Just be careful as the juice might get into your eyes, so keep your other hand clean when applying. Leave it for about 30 minutes then wash it off with your favorite shampoo. Repeat 2-3 times a week for a better result. Onion juice can also be used for treating sun burn, reducing dark spot, rejuvenating body tissues, and provide healthy glowing skin.
5. It is a snack for the brain
A study in 2005 at Hokkaido Takai University in Japan, has come to conclusion that a sulfur compound in onions improves memory impairment. Later in 2007, they discovered that people suffering memory loss, who ate layered vegetables has improved their ability to recall. Researchers and food experts say that onion’s antioxidant flushes off harmful toxins found in the brain, and slow down the deterioration of memory related to ageing. Eating raw onions has proven to be the most beneficial way of getting its minerals and healthy components, as cooking may loss its effects.
