Thai Polo & Equestrian Club
The Thai Polo & Equestrian Club set in 250 hectares of stunning grounds with the beautiful rolling hills of Thai countryside as a backdrop, is pure polo heaven. Located only 90 minutes from Bangkok and just 20 minutes from Pattaya, this polo Mecca really does exceed every expectation. Harald Link and Nunthinee Tanner are the owners and behind the aim to bring top class polo to Thailand. The Club launched in 2005 and has stabling for over 250 horses, with 80 of these specially selected from Argentina, Australia and England and available to hire for any ability in any level of tournament on offer. Thai Polo can proudly boast that the Club is able to mount any standard of player including beginners and 7 goal pros alike with ease.
The Club welcomes first-time players and have launched a Thai Polo Club League featuring lower levels of tournaments from 3 to 8 goals. Harald and Khun Nunthinee are fully aware that higher levels of polo attract international professionals, but they are also passionate about producing homegrown players – and that means appealing to the young. For children looking to give the sport a try, small Thai ponies are on offer to hire alongside the polo ponies for the more experienced. It really is a location for all. Equine care is paramount at the Thai Polo Club, with a team of four horses typically being attended to by one groom. There is a vet on standby for every hour of all 365 days of the year. The Club’s latest facility includes an Equine Clinic, which is fully equipped with an operating theatre, digital Xray machine and tendon rehabilitation equipment. A pharmacy, lab and four intensive care stables makes this a centre of Equine Veterinary excellence in Asia.
Three spectacular irrigated grounds and a stick and ball field that would rival ay cricket pitch, are tended to by a dedicated team of groundsmen. Players certainly don’t have to worry about a bouncing ball (although the perfect conditions do mean that the reliable ‘missed shot’ excuse can’t be wheeled out). The legendary polo coach Rege Ludwig is on hand all year round to offer pinpoint advice to both beginners and established pros. When Rege holds an informal lesson in the spacious and sumptuous Clubhouse, all attend. His ability to indicate and illustrate points varying from the correct seat, to tactics and preparation that might have otherwise gone unattended to is something not to be missed.
On the field, a one hour lesson being put through your paces – during which Thai Polo supply talented school ponies – will leave you feeling like an eight-chukka open experience and noticeably improved in chukkas the next afternoon. From the intensive training on offer with legendary trainer, Rege Ludwig to the unsurpassable hospitality, Thai Polo & Equestrian Club is, and remains a unique and unrivalled polo experience; a worthy inclusion to any polo destination bucket list.
