English for Thais

Job vacancy: We are seeking a Project Coordinator for an ambitious new programme placing native English-language teachers in Thailand’s most disadvantaged schools nationwide. We are offering a very competitive salary and benefits package based on experience.

English for Thais Programme – Our Mission: To establish an international programme for recruiting and placing native English language volunteers with disadvantaged schools in Thailand in order to increase the English proficiency of Thai children.

Desired outcomes
 To enhance the life skills and employment prospects for the children of Thailand
 To help Thailand’s remote communities and tourism industry to thrive
 To increase the English-speaking competency of Thai children so the next generation of workers can help the nation to be economically competitive in international business and trade

Programmes of work for 2018

1. Short-term goal: Conduct two pilot programmes (10-20 volunteers each) placing native English-language volunteers (1-4 weeks) to provide teaching support in disadvantaged schools in Thailand's remote communities, particularly targeting the islands and hill tribe communities.

2. Long-term goal: Design and establish an English co-teacher volunteer programme for long-term placements (3-12 months) in disadvantaged government schools all over Thailand.

Stakeholders

• Native English-language volunteers will be recruited in Thailand and from abroad for short placements of 1-4 weeks, as well as 3-12 months. Volunteers will receive training and support throughout the placement

• The nationwide scheme, initiated by the Secretary for the Ministry of Education, falls under the remit of a charitable organisation and is funded and supported by the private sector. This programme is not a political initiative and is not a substitute for government-funded support for education. It aims to meet a need that cannot be met by government.

• Thailand’s international schools will support the initiative by offering their staff as volunteers for short-term placements.

• The ambassadors of Australia, Canada, Ireland, UK and USA have pledged their support to promote the opportunity to graduates back home

Universities in each of the five countries will help us to promote the opportunity to their graduates and alumni.

Private sector funding support pledged by Pratcharath – 12 organisations who established the "Sustainable Education Leadership Program" (CONNEXT ED) as a powerful force in the development of education. They include: Bangkok Bank, Thai Beverage, Siam Cement, Siam Commercial Bank, Mitr Phol Sugar, Thai Union Group, PTT, Central Group, Berli Jucker, Charoen Pokphand Foods, CP and True.

TEFLPros – an online training company who will help us to recruit and train volunteers to TEFL standard. Volunteers will receive their TEFL certificate once they have completed the 4-week placement with the school.

Steering committee: a select group of professionals representing the Ministry of Education, private sector and international schools who will guide the project management team for establishing this ambitious nationwide initiative.

Project Management Team

Under the guidance of a steering committee, we will build a team to manage the project. James Whiting (British) has been appointed by the steering committee as the Project Manager and we are looking to build a team of English-speaking Thai nationals initially composed of: a Project Coordinator and a Placement Team (1 Placement Team manager, 1 assistant and 1 administrator) to manage the following streams of work:

• Marketing and recruitment of volunteers
• Managing partnerships with international schools, government schools and the private sector
• Coordinate training of volunteers
• Manage Thai school relationships and the support placement of volunteers into the schools
• Conduct monitoring and evaluation to improve the programmes for the future.

About the Project Coordinator role

We are looking to employ an English-speaking Thai national as Project Coordinator who has experience in office management, partnerships and marketing. They must have exceptional communication skills and solid experience in managing a team. Reporting to James, the Project Manager, they will work together to recruit the new team and establish the new systems and procedures for the streams of work identified above.

The project coordinator will also be responsible for establishing recruitment, training, appraisal and development processes for the Project Management Team staff. The rest of the team will report directly to the Project Coordinator. The size of the Project Management team is expected to grow quickly as we work with a growing number of Thai government schools and recruit more volunteers.
